What is behind the mega hype about CBD oil?

Products with cannabidiol, a component of the cannabis plant, are said to have a gentle effect against pain, inflammation, sleep and skin problems. Many people associate cannabis primarily with drug use – but that is about to change. We explain how cannabidiol (CBD) works and how it can be used.

CBD oil: what is cannabidiol?

The main active ingredients of the cannabis plant are CBD (cannabidiol) and THC (delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol). In contrast to THC – which, for example as marijuana, develops a psychedelic effect and thus makes you “high” – CBD is not intoxicating. The European Court of Justice also sees it this way and states: In comparison to THC, “apparently no psychotropic effects or harmful effects” can be identified. This makes it clear: CBD is not a drug. Rather, CBD is said to have anticonvulsant, analgesic and anti-inflammatory properties. Cannabidiol is also said to have a calming and anxiolytic effect.

In Germany, CBD can be sold without a prescription as a dietary supplement or cosmetic – but not as a medicinal product. Cigarettes with CBD filling are also commercially available in Switzerland, but Germany has put a stop to this for the time being. The most common form of administration remains CBD oil. However, CBD can also be taken as a tablet or processed into cosmetics. CBD oil is non-toxic, so it can be used over a long period of the time.
